Motorola Renew Review

The Motorola Renew is being promoted as the world’s first carbon neutral phone. Most of the emphasis is placed on environmentally friendly features and budget-beating quality. It doesn’t come with too many extra’s but is great for keeping in touch with friends and family.

Motorola Renew Design

The Motorola Renew measures 111 mm (height) x 45 mm (width) x 14.7 mm (thickness), and weighs in at a very light 83 grams. The phone promotes itself as being very earth-friendly and its colour scheme corresponds to this - except for the cream keypad and black backing, all other phone casings are lime green. The carbon neutral phone boasts that all plastic parts are made entirely from recycled water bottles, and all extra packaging is 100% recycled materials.
The Renew is a very compact phone and the screen is therefore a fairly small 1.44-inches. There is also only support for 65 000 colours, meaning that image resolution is acceptable but not the greatest quality. Below the screen is a small navigation pad, consisting of call and call-end buttons, a music player shortcut, a toggle that can be set to four different user-defined features, and a central OK button. The alphanumeric keypad is fairly small and flush with the phone, but the keys are well spaced to allow for ease of use.

Motorola Renew Music

The Motorola Renew does not place too much emphasis on music, but a basic music player and FM radio have been included. By using a MicroSD card, 2 GB worth of music tracks can be stored and played. In order to listen to the FM radio, earphones need to be attached to the phone and doubled as an aerial.

Motorola Renew Camera

The Motorola Renew unfortunately doesn’t include a camera.

Motorola Renew Applications and Internet

The Motorola Renew offers the basic phone applications, and also includes a couple of extras. T-Mobiles myFaves is a feature that allows you to call up to 5 of your favourite contacts without using up your minutes. CrystalTalk is a Motorola application that reduces background noise, ensuring that your phone calls are much clearer and easier to hear.
The phone unfortunately doesn’t have any Bluetooth capabilities, but GPRS does allow for some connectivity.

Motorola Renew Summary

The Motorola Renew is a great phone if you’re looking to keep in touch without spending too much and while still doing your bit for the environment. The lack of extras means that many won’t find the appeal in the phone, but as a budget, “green” phone the Renew is perfect.
